of the person who killed rockies, there is a $1,000 reward. reporting from san francisco, patrick sedieio, cbs 5. >> isn't that awful? a vigil was held last night at walnut creek for a young man shot and killed during a confrontation with police earlier this week. the vigil was held outside of the hair salon where he worked. the police were called to an apartment early thursday where a woman said that banta was attacking his roommate. the police say he was armed with a knife and that they were forced to shoot. friends and family say that banta was a gentle person who must have suffered a breakdown. >> and we just don't understand how someone could have taken his life. i am sure that something happened. but how -- someone could take, he is small in stature. 5'4", 130 pounds. how threatening is that? >> family members say police have not shared any information with them about banta's death. the officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave during the investigation. >>> this morning, negotiators in the senate are still trying to forge a last-minute compromise to save all americ

hour for a young man shot and killed by police in walnut creek earlier this week. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is at the vigil, where friends and family say the man police described is not the person they knew. elissa. >> reporter: hi, ann. that candlelight vigil has been going on for an hour. you can see a large group of people outside salon amour in downtown walnut creek, where anthony banta, jr., worked for the past two years. those who knew him say he is not the man who police describe attacking his roommate early thursday morning. here's some video from thursday. the 911 call came in just after 3 a.m. dispatchers could hear screaming in the background. officers arrived to the diablo point apartments and say they were forced to shoot banta, who they say was armed. tonight, dozens gathered and shared memories of the man they called gentle and kind. they're puzzled why he acted the way he did thursday morning. we also got a chance to speak with his grandfather, who tearfully described a grandson who was very loved. he told me he does not know of any mental illness in the fa

killed roxy, there is a $1,000 reward. reporting from san francisco, patrick sedillo, cbs 5. >>> in walnut creek, a vigil is getting under way at this hour for a young man fatally shot by police earlier this week. elissa harrington is at the vigil, where friends and family are wondering how this could have happened. >> reporter: we're learning for about anthony banta, jr. he is 22 and worked as a hairdresser in downtown walnut creek. behind me friends and family have gathered for a candlelight vigil outside of selanne amour where he worked for the past two years. friends and family want to know what happened that night and it was early thursday morning that police shot and killed banta after they were called to the diablo point apartments. police say his roommate's girlfriend called 911. she said that banta was attacking her boyfriend. he was armed with a knife and police say that they were forced to shoot. those who were close to banta are confused about the events that led up to the shooting. one of the owners of the salon says he was shy and well liked by clients. >> he w

three. how did abc news did on a parity with nbc and cbs? what's the timeframe that that happen? >> abc news, everyone always says it's the fourth out of three. for the '60s and '70s but it was a very weak news organization by all accounts. let's be clear. abc was the weakest of networks as well. if you recall there were two can be seen networks. nbc had to spin off one because they have trust concerns. leonard who took it over started building up the entertainment part at abc. is some degree of success for the 70s. he concluded away to really get parity with cbs and nbc was to build a great news organization. not so much because leonard love the news but the local stations been most of their money off of their newscast. he wanted to improve his affiliate line, really created modern olympics and said you go over the news come you spend as much money as you want which he did. and the buildup started in 1990 -- 1977 through the '80s. he did it in part by bring and what he'd done in sports. he brought in big stars. he already had barbara walters but he brought in david brinkley and diane s

if there is no deal made. one poll i saw, cbs, had approval rating for congress, 11%. really, the president has them in the corner, arguing against tax cuts for the middle class. i think that is not where the republicans want to be. ultimately, i think they are going to have to step back. i don't know -- i doubt they will be able to do a big thing in the next two days, i think they will do a mauler package. but they are -- they're facing real voter backlash if we go over the cliff and tax cuts go up on the middle-class voters. >> we are hearing a number of lawmakers saying, i don't think it's the worst thing, senator johnson who was just with us said that he thinks it is being over dramatized, it is not the worst possible thing to go over the cliff. how do the republicans spin it if we do? >> i don't think it's how they need to spin it. i think doug is absolutely right that president obama has won on this, i think very short-term battle with respect to the tax cuts. however, the bigger issue that we are not discussing enough, which i think this whole debate should have centered around, is not the g.
